In addition to the acid-neutralizing ingredients found in most antacids (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium carbonate), Gaviscon contains alginic acid and sodium bicarbonate.

How does Gaviscon work? When the alginates in Gaviscon reach the stomach, they mix with the stomach acid to make a gel. This gel floats on top of the milk in the stomach covering it so it is less likely to reflux back up the esophagus.

Guardium works by blocking the acid pumps in your stomach, making stomach less acidic. Consequently, reducing your acid reflux & heartburn symptoms.

Under the generic name algeldrate, aluminium hydroxide is used as an antacid. Aluminium hydroxide is preferred over other alternatives such as sodium bicarbonate because Al(OH) 3, being insoluble, does not increase the pH of stomach above 7 and hence, does not trigger secretion of excess stomach acid.

Gaviscon is a medication that relieves reflux. It is important to know that Gaviscon’s formula varies from country to country. The US version is not very useful.

Alginic acid reduces reflux via its floating, foaming, and viscous properties [A27142]. Alginic acid precipitates upon contact with gastric acid to create a mechanical barrier, or a "raft", that displaces the postprandial acid pocket [A32960].
